NurtureBio is an early-life wellness company built around a simple idea: some of the most important lessons about the infant gut microbiome can be found in human milk.

Founded by Stuart Smith and inspired by his family's experience, the company launched its first product in May 2026. NurtureBio is a daily synbiotic supplement for infants and toddlers that combines five human milk oligosaccharides, or HMOs, with four targeted probiotic strains.

The Origin Story

The company's origin began years earlier, after Smith's child experienced five ear infections in five months. Each infection was treated with a different course of antibiotics. While the antibiotics addressed the infections, they were followed by chronic constipation that the family struggled to resolve.

Smith and his wife tried single-strain probiotics, personalized probiotics, fiber gummies and laxatives. Their child finally found relief after the family learned about HMOs and began combining them with the existing probiotic routine.

"We kept encountering products that focused on adding bacteria but paid much less attention to the environment those bacteria needed," Smith says. "Once we understood the relationship between HMOs and beneficial gut bacteria, we started asking why those ingredients were not being brought together in a product designed specifically for infants and toddlers."

That question became the foundation for NurtureBio.

How It Works

HMOs are complex carbohydrates naturally present in breast milk. Babies digest very little of them directly. Instead, many HMOs reach the lower digestive tract, where certain infant-associated bacteria can use them as a food source. This relationship between HMOs and beneficial bacteria helped shape NurtureBio's synbiotic approach.

Each daily NurtureBio serving sachet contains five HMOs and four probiotic strains selected for early-life use. The powder can be mixed into breast milk, formula, smoothies, or yogurt and is formulated for children from birth through 48 months.

Scientific Foundation and Certifications

NurtureBio developed the formulation with guidance from an esteemed scientific advisory board that includes researchers in human milk biology, pediatrics and the infant microbiome. Members include Ardythe Morrow, PhD; David Newburg, PhD; Diana Taft, PhD; and James Versalovic, MD, PhD.

The finished product has received the Clean Label Project Purity Award and First 1,000 Days Promise certification, reflecting testing for contaminants and standards designed for products used during pregnancy, infancy and early childhood.

Simplicity and Accessibility

For Smith, the goal was to translate complex microbiome research into something parents could realistically use every day.

"Parents should not need a background in microbiology to understand what they are giving their child," he says. "Our product had to be thoughtfully formulated, transparent and simple enough to become part of a family's daily routine. We built the product we wished had existed when our own family needed it."

Market Opportunity and Future Vision

The company enters the market as interest in gut health continues moving beyond the adult supplement aisle. Parents are becoming more familiar with probiotics, but many are still learning about the role of prebiotics and HMOs in supporting the developing infant microbiome.

NurtureBio sees an opportunity to help define this emerging category through age-specific products, clearer consumer education and continued engagement with researchers in early-life nutrition. Its first infant and toddler synbiotic is intended to serve as the foundation for a broader maternal and child wellness platform, with future products planned across the toddler, prenatal, postnatal and pediatric stages.

The company's long-term vision remains rooted in the experience that started it: combining breast milk science with practical products that help families support gut health from the beginning.
