Functional Frozen Enters C-Store
f'real, the blend-it-yourself frozen beverage brand distributed across more than 17,000 U.S. and Canadian locations, is stepping squarely into the functional beverage segment with a new Protein Smoothie line set to launch nationally in early 2027. The two debut SKUs — Tropical Mango and Peanut Butter Banana with Reese's Peanut Butter — each deliver 20 grams of protein per serving sourced from milk protein isolate, come in under 250 calories, and carry no artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners. The announcement was made at the 2026 NACS Show in Las Vegas, the convenience and fuel retailing industry's largest annual trade event.
The protein positioning is a meaningful pivot for a brand historically anchored in indulgent milkshakes. Milk protein isolate is a highly purified dairy-derived ingredient prized for its complete amino acid profile and high leucine content, making it a credible structure-function ingredient for satiety and muscle recovery claims. At 20 grams per finished serving with a sub-250-calorie load, the smoothies sit comfortably within parameters that post-workout and weight-management-oriented consumers have come to expect from functional protein beverages. The products are also made with real fruit and join the existing Strawberry Banana Smoothie — a plant-based, vitamin C-rich option — as part of an expanding better-for-you tier within the f'real portfolio.
Operator Upside and Platform Evolution
For convenience store and foodservice operators, the functional upgrade arrives alongside two additional innovations that reinforce f'real's category position. The brand is rolling out its most significant packaging redesign across its full portfolio beginning January 2027 — a bolder color palette, icon-based callouts for key claims such as protein content and real-milk sourcing, and clearer Milkshake-vs.-Smoothie navigation. Cleaner on-shelf communication directly supports impulse purchase for better-for-you claims, a dynamic that protein and hydration-focused brands have leveraged with increasing sophistication in the grab-and-go channel.
Equally important for operators is the debut preview of the B8 Blender, the next generation of f'real's Blend n' Sip self-serve platform. The B8 features a larger HD touchscreen capable of displaying promotions and interactive content, cup-recognition technology for more consistent blend execution, and an expanded blend temperature range. From a maintenance standpoint, the system has been reengineered with a more accessible interior to reduce downtime — a frequent pain point in high-traffic foodservice environments. The B8 will be available for order to convenience and foodservice partners in 2027.
Market Context
The launch reflects broader macro tailwinds in functional frozen and chilled beverages. Consumer demand for high-protein, on-the-go formats has accelerated across convenience retail, driven in part by GLP-1-adjacent eating patterns that prioritize protein density and caloric efficiency. Brands that can deliver credible nutritional benefits within familiar, craveable formats — rather than clinical-tasting shakes — are increasingly capturing trial from mainstream shoppers who would not previously have engaged with the supplement or sports-nutrition aisle.
f'real is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rich Products Corporation, a family-owned food company with annual sales exceeding $5.8 billion operating across more than 100 global locations. That manufacturing and distribution infrastructure positions the Protein Smoothie line for a rapid national footprint at launch. Megan Grinstead, Vice President of Customer and Consumer Marketing at Rich Products Corporation, framed the rollout as a platform-level commitment: "Together with our bold new packaging and next-generation B8 Blender within our Blend n' Sip platform, we're elevating every part of the f'real experience."
