The Launch
GHOST, the Chicago-based sports nutrition and lifestyle brand, has released GHOST® Energy x A&W® Root Beer, a licensed-flavor energy drink developed in partnership with Keurig Dr Pepper. The new SKU draws on A&W's root beer float heritage to deliver what the brand describes as a sweet, creamy finish within GHOST's functional energy format. It marks the second co-branded KDP energy flavor from GHOST in 2026, following the earlier GHOST Energy x 7UP® launch.
The energy drink category continues to reward brands that pair performance positioning with authentic flavor differentiation. GHOST's approach — licensing iconic consumer packaged goods brands and translating them into functional beverage formats — has become a defining strategy in the better-for-you energy segment, where transparency in formulation and recognizable taste profiles are increasingly decisive purchase drivers. The brand has previously collaborated with Sour Patch Kids®, OREO®, Cinnabon®, and Warheads®, among others, building a portfolio anchored in nostalgia and label clarity.
The KDP Angle
For Keurig Dr Pepper, the collaboration extends the commercial reach of legacy soft drink IP into the fast-growing energy occasion. Justin Whitmore, President of Energy, Juice, Sauce, and Drink Mix Brands at Keurig Dr Pepper, framed the release as part of a broader strategy to migrate established brand equity into new consumption contexts — a pattern increasingly common as major beverage houses look to monetize dormant or underutilized trademark assets through functional and better-for-you adjacencies.
GHOST founder and CEO Dan Lourenco cited the response to the 7UP collaboration as validation for the continued KDP partnership, noting that recognizable flavor architecture gives GHOST room to "do something completely unexpected in energy." The brand's transparent formula ethos — which typically surfaces caffeine source, B-vitamin stack, and amino acid dose on-label — aligns with growing retailer and consumer demand for ingredient clarity in the functional beverage aisle. GHOST also entered the protein and functional food space in 2024 with a high-protein cereal line, signaling ambitions beyond beverages.
Distribution & Outlook
GHOST Energy x A&W® is now available at select retailers nationwide, including Walmart, Target, Kroger, Publix, CVS, Casey's, Circle K, and ABSCO, with DoorDash covering on-demand access. The multi-channel rollout — spanning mass, drug, convenience, and grocery — reflects the distribution maturity GHOST has built since its early days as a specialty supplement brand. The brand's products now reach consumers in more than 40 countries through GNC and select global retail partners.
For operators and buyers evaluating the energy drink and functional beverage segment, the GHOST x KDP pipeline signals a durable licensed-flavor playbook. As legacy soft drink trademarks seek relevance with younger, health-aware consumers, co-branded energy formats offer a relatively low-risk mechanism for both parties: established flavor recognition lowers trial friction, while the functional positioning — caffeine, B vitamins, amino acids — justifies a premium price point versus traditional carbonated soft drinks. Expect the GHOST-KDP collaboration to produce additional SKUs as long as sell-through data supports the strategy.
