Ceremonial-grade matcha and complete milk protein converge in a shelf-stable can with Matchi Global LLC's debut lineup, announced September 22. The Alexandria, Virginia startup is positioning its Matchi canned protein matcha latte as the first U.S. matcha-first brand to compete seriously in the high-protein ready-to-drink segment—a category that reached $8.1 billion in 2025, up 71% from $4.7 billion in 2021.
Each 8.4 oz can delivers 20 grams of filtered milk protein concentrate supplying all nine essential amino acids, 4 grams of prebiotic fiber, and approximately 120 mg of naturally occurring caffeine from the matcha itself. The formulation launches in three flavor expressions—Vanilla, Lavender, and Banana—all free of artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, and preservatives. At roughly 120 mg of caffeine per can, the functional load is comparable to a strong espresso shot without synthetic stimulant additions.
Formulation & Functional Positioning
The matcha sourced for Matchi is described as ceremonially shaded and stone-milled from first spring harvest leaves, a processing standard associated with higher L-theanine content and the characteristic umami-sweet flavor profile that distinguishes ceremonial from culinary or ingredient-grade material. Filtered milk protein—rather than a whey isolate or plant-protein blend—provides the complete amino acid profile while contributing the creamy mouthfeel the brand says differentiates the drink from protein shakes. The addition of 4 grams of prebiotic fiber per serving targets gut-health-conscious consumers and reinforces the product's multi-benefit positioning across protein and hydration and gut health categories.
Founder Jordan Martinez, a U.S. Air Force veteran, described the brand's philosophy as matcha-led rather than protein-retrofitted. "We're not a protein drink company with matcha. We're a matcha company with 20 grams of protein," Martinez said, emphasizing that development went through eleven formulation rounds before the product met an internal benchmark requiring an immediate positive taste response.
Market Timing & Distribution Roadmap
Matchi's launch coincides with accelerating U.S. matcha demand. The domestic matcha market was valued at $478.8 million in 2024 and is projected to reach $762.6 million by 2030, with North America identified as the fastest-growing regional market globally. The protein RTD and functional beverage segments are equally active, driven by consumer demand for convenient, multi-benefit formats that eliminate the trade-off between taste quality and nutritional density.
No major U.S. brand currently owns the positioned intersection of cafe-quality ceremonial matcha and meaningful protein content in a canned format, according to Matchi's competitive analysis. Adjacent players offer canned matcha with negligible protein or high-protein RTDs with matcha as a minor flavoring—a gap the brand is explicitly targeting.
The go-to-market strategy is DTC-first via drinkmatchi.com, where pre-orders are live now with fulfillment beginning December 2026. Products ship in 12-packs and 24-packs at a premium price point; a subscription tier brings the per-can cost below $4.00. A Washington, D.C. market activation is planned for Spring 2027 to coincide with the National Cherry Blossom Festival, followed by selective independent retail distribution ahead of a future national retail phase. The brand is also assembling an advisory board of beverage industry veterans, with members to be announced.
