Oberweis Enters High-Protein Functional Dessert Category
Oberweis, part of Hoffmann Family of Companies, will launch its first High Protein Ice Cream on July 19, marking the Chicago-based dairy's entry into the growing protein-fortified frozen dessert segment. The product delivers 30 grams of protein per pint (10 grams per scoop) in four flavors: Vanilla, Strawberry, Cookie Dough, and Chocolate. The line will be available at Oberweis scoop shops, through home delivery, and at select local grocery stores.
Quality Ingredients Without Compromise
The product uses premium dairy ingredients with no artificial colors or flavors, positioning it within Oberweis' heritage of quality standards established since 1927. This commitment to clean-label formulation aligns with the functional foods segment's emphasis on ingredient transparency and whole-food sourcing.
CEO on Functional Quality Standards
Renato DePaolis, CEO of Oberweis, said: "Everyone's looking for more protein these days, but we weren't willing to compromise on what makes Oberweis ice cream special to chase a trend. If it wasn't real super premium ice cream, we were not going to put our name on it. Our new High Protein Ice Cream isn't a trade-off. It's real ice cream that tastes the way ice cream should, with protein built right in. It's simply another easy, delicious way for families to work a little more protein into their day, without giving up the treat they love."
Market Opportunity in Functional Indulgences
The move reflects broader industry demand for protein-enriched indulgences that appeal to health-conscious consumers seeking functional foods that don't compromise on taste or ingredient quality. By maintaining traditional ice cream positioning rather than marketing as a "frozen dessert," Oberweis targets operators and retail partners seeking premium protein products that deliver genuine wellness benefits—a differentiator in a category often dominated by functional alternatives that sacrifice sensory experience.
Launch Strategy
The company will support the launch with exclusive tasting events throughout the summer at scoop shops, pop-ups at local gyms, and community locations.
