The Product
Saint James Iced Tea is entering the functional energy beverage segment with Saint James Yerba Mate, a certified organic, non-GMO ready-to-drink line available in three 16 oz flavors: Mango Passionfruit, Raspberry Lemon, and Strawberry Tangerine. Each bottle delivers 150mg of natural caffeine, 20–25 calories, and just 3–4g of sugar — a nutritional profile squarely aimed at better-for-you energy consumers trading away synthetic caffeine and high-sugar legacy RTDs.
The active compound stack is yerba mate's native trifecta: caffeine for immediate stimulation, polyphenols for antioxidant support, and theobromine — a naturally occurring xanthine also found in cacao — which is associated with a smoother, more sustained energy curve than caffeine alone. Leaves are ethically sourced from Ilex paraguariensis cultivars in South America, where the plant has a centuries-long tradition of ceremonial and daily use. The finished formulation carries both certified organic and non-GMO credentials, positioning it favorably within clean-label beverage sets at major grocery retail.
Market Position
The yerba mate category has expanded rapidly in the U.S. over the past several years, driven by consumer demand for natural caffeine alternatives to synthetic energy drinks. Saint James is entering alongside established players but with a brand identity built on low-sugar organic iced tea — a distinction Brenden Cohen, co-founder and co-CEO, frames as a natural extension. "Our consumers already turn to Saint James as part of their daily routine, so creating a more functional option was the next logical step," Cohen said. The 150mg caffeine dose is competitive with leading mate RTDs and sits well above the typical 35–75mg range found in conventional iced teas, giving the line a clear functional differentiation story on shelf.
Distribution is launching direct-to-consumer at $39.99 per 12-pack on Amazon and SaintJamesIcedTea.com, with brick-and-mortar rollout targeting Kroger and Albertsons banners nationwide. The brand projects more than 7,500 retail doors for the new Yerba Mate SKUs by end of 2026. That build sits within a broader momentum story: Saint James Iced Tea reported 164% year-over-year growth in August 2026, with total distribution across both the iced tea and new mate portfolios now exceeding 25,000 doors in the U.S. and Canada.
Channel Expansion Context
The Yerba Mate launch is one of several simultaneous distribution moves. Saint James earlier this month began selling an exclusive variety pack at Costco locations nationwide and activated a partnership with fast-casual chain Just Salad, placing its traditional tea line across all 120 U.S. locations — a foodservice channel play that complements the grocery push. The new Yerba Mate line ships in the brand's 100% recyclable, resealable aluminum bottles with an updated green and chrome design, a format choice that supports both sustainability positioning and on-shelf differentiation in a category where packaging is an active consumer signal.
To support the launch, Saint James is running its first multi-celebrity national campaign — featuring NHL star Jack Hughes, former NFL wide receiver Victor Cruz, and entrepreneur Isabela Rangel Grutman — with out-of-home placements, consumer sampling programs, and a college athlete ambassador network extending through fall 2026. For functional beverage operators and retail buyers assessing the category, the combination of clean-label credentials, a differentiated compound stack, and aggressive retail velocity data makes the SKU worth tracking as the yerba mate segment continues to attract mainstream attention.
