Noble kava is moving from Pacific Island tradition to premium grocery cooler. Melo, an Australian-founded sparkling kava beverage brand built in the U.S., launched at Erewhon Market on Oct. 30, placing two of its three SKUs — Passionfruit Orange & Guava and Tahitian Lime — in the functional beverage sets of all 13 Southern California Erewhon locations. The 12 fl. oz. cans are zero-sugar, zero-calorie, alcohol-free, vegan, and gluten-free, occupying a clean-label position that aligns with Erewhon's certified-organic sourcing standards.

The Ingredient Story

Melo's point of difference starts at origin. The brand sources noble kava exclusively from family-owned farms in Vanuatu — the Pacific archipelago considered the genetic heartland of high-quality Piper methysticum cultivars. Noble kava varieties are distinguished from "tudei" (two-day) strains by their kavalactone profiles, which are associated with acute relaxation effects and a more favorable safety margin for regular consumption. Melo is also an official private-sector partner of the UN and International Trade Centre's Pacific Islands Kava Initiative, a program aimed at standardizing quality benchmarks and expanding market access for kava-growing communities — credentials that add supply-chain transparency increasingly demanded by premium natural retailers.

"For a decade, the functional beverage market has run on the go, go, go mentality of energy drinks, but now what people actually want is permission to slow down," said Amy Betts, co-founder and CEO of Melo. "Kava has done that job for centuries; it just needed a format that fit a modern shelf."

Calm as a Category

Betts's observation reflects a genuine shift in the functional beverage landscape. While energy and focus have historically dominated the better-for-you drinks segment, consumer interest in stress relief, sleep support, and mood management has accelerated — driven in part by growing awareness around cortisol, burnout, and the adjacent GLP-1 and mindful-consumption trends reshaping purchase intent. Kava sits at the intersection of these forces: a botanically active ingredient with centuries of ethnobotanical use, an emerging body of clinical interest in its anxiolytic kavalactone compounds, and a format history (kava bars, loose-leaf preparations, tinctures) that has until recently limited its mainstream shelf appeal.

The Erewhon placement is a meaningful validator. The 14-location Certified B Corp and organic retailer is one of the most selective gatekeepers in U.S. natural retail, and its beverage coolers function as an early-indicator channel for ingredients gaining mainstream traction. Melo's existing distribution footprint — Amazon, Thrive Market, Raley's, Bristol Farms, Lassen's, BevMo!, and Gopuff — suggests the brand has already secured multi-channel validation before the Erewhon listing.

Distribution Outlook

The Erewhon launch is framed internally as a milestone in a broader natural-channel growth arc, with additional retail expansion planned through 2027. For ingredient suppliers and co-manufacturers tracking kava as a formulation opportunity, the mainstream shelf placement of a sparkling, zero-sugar kava RTD — rather than a tincture or capsule — signals that consumer education around the botanical has matured enough to support impulse purchase at retail. Operators evaluating the calm-functional set should note that kava's primary bioactive compounds, kavalactones, are fat-soluble, making emulsification and beverage matrix compatibility key formulation considerations as more brands enter the space.
